Impact of New and Digital Media Case Study

Has the power of mainstream media been challenged by the impact of digital technology? Focus on the BBC and Sky News.

Question 1.

Has new and digital media had an impact upon ownership and control of the media institutions involved in your case study? Explain in detail any impact and what exactly has changed. 

Briefly summarise the background and history of the two News institutions (BBC/SKY)? Where and when did they originate?

How much do these News institutions dominate in terms of the UK and Globally?
 Find relevant facts & figures. 

How are these institutions traditionally financed/how did they make a profit? (publicly funded Licence Fee v advertising).

How are these institutions regulated? (Watershed, Press Complaints Commission)

How have both the BBC and Sky News adapted in the way that they present the news to audiences? What how has it developed across the different platforms? 

What has changed in how the news is presented? (news values, time of day, how the presenter is represented, style of delivery, frequency, timeliness etc)

Question 2.

What impact has there been on how the media institution now has to produce the texts and the way in which the texts/products are distributed and exhibited?

      What methods did the BBC/SKY traditionally used to obtain News? (reporters, size of news team, presenters, sources)

      What technology did the BBC and Sky original use to record/exhibit their news content? (TV BETA CAM/VHS cameras, helicopters, satellite technology (weather), phones, TV set)

      How has BBC/SKY adopted NMT to source and record News content? Give examples of how News providers are using user generated content (UGC) to enhance content and create audience participation.

      What has been the impact of the increase in News channels across the TV and the Internet? Give examples. (You Tube, 60 second News)

      Explain why 24-hour news delivery has put pressure on News institutions.

      How has converging platforms (TV, Web, Radio) benefited BBC/SKY in how they present the News to audiences? Give specific examples i.e new audiences are being reached via hand-held devices / apps etc.)

Question 3.

 What concerns/considerations are there (if any) for the media institutions involved in your case study as a result of the impact of new and digital media?

      What are the implications of competing against free, online content and independent news sites (i.e the BBC)?

      What impact does having breaking News delivered across 24 hours rather than at specific times of the day?

      Highlight what the concerns would be of untrained journalists producing news content? (consider the vitality of the source)

       What issues do advertisers face with audiences becoming more fragmented due to the number of different News content providers?

Who are the primary target audience now and has this changed? Who was it before and how do you know?

What impact has there been on the way in which the audience now consume the media products/texts involved in your case study? How does it differ from what went before?

      How has new digital technology given the public ability to record and create USG content for the News? (give examples of how USG content and how it has been incorporated into broadcast news )

      How are audiences benefiting in having the News on a mobile, laptop or ipad? Outline with specific examples or facts and figures.

      What opportunity does it give for audiences to be exposed to ideologies of different news providers?

      Why is the existing audience model is no longer applicable?

      How has it changed the existing viewing times for the news?

6. Is the size of the audience any different now than before the impact of new and digital media (or has the pattern of usage changed)?
